Adelaide artist Tony Wilson has been selected for the inaugural six month Fontanelle Studio Residency sponsored by the City of Port Adelaide Enfield.
The residency was offered to a local artist to help them develop their career through having access to high quality studio spaces and facilities, as well as networking opportunities with other studio artists.
City of PAE Mayor Gary Johanson said, “As showcased by the recent Wonderwalls Festival, Port Adelaide is a hub for arts and culture in South Australia, so it’s fantastic that we are able to expand our reputation through programs such as this.”
“In selecting an artist for the inaugural residency, we were looking for somebody local who was not only a brilliant artist, but was going to work with us to engage the community through workshops and participation programs.”
Tony, who is of Aboriginal and Italian descent, is currently working at Alberton Primary School mentoring students with their art.
Tony said, “Port Adelaide is alive and ever changing with the times. I have for many years had a vision for a cultural space where artists and young people can come together to create.”
“I was born and raised in the area and I’m excited to be a part of the changing Port in an active way,” he added.
The City of PAE worked to bring Fontanelle to Port Adelaide in early 2017 to help activate heritage buildings in the Port through arts, culture and music.
Fontanelle have brought colour and life to the area under a free lease agreement with Council. The Fontanelle Studio Residency is sponsored by Council and will work to support local artists whilst engaging the community in art.
Fontanelle offers creative and practical support through its inclusive studio community, by curating and presenting innovative, interactive exhibition programs, and by engaging with the wider community through artist-led workshops and public art projects.
Fontanelle Port Adelaide houses a main gallery, a technical workshop, a dedicated space for artist-led workshops, an outdoor event space and 14 individual studios. The Fontanelle Gallery is open 1pm – 5pm Thursdays to Sundays, and is located at 175 St Vincent Street, Port Adelaide.
